So you've just gotten a perm and you're feeling fabulous. Your hair is full of body and bounce and you can finally achieve the perfect curl.

But then you start to wonder...can I wash my hair yet? How long do I have to wait?

If you're wondering can I wash my hair 36 hours after a perm, the answer is maybe.

It really depends on your scalp and how your perm was done. We Asked a Few Experts to Weigh In.

"It is generally recommended that you wait at least 24-48 hours before washing your hair after a perm," says Gabriel Samra, stylist at Salon Eva Michelle in Los Angeles. "If you have sensitive skin, it's best to wait even longer."

If you have oily skin or are prone to getting scalp build-up, you may be able to get away with washing your hair sooner.

"Oily scalps can tolerate washing as soon as 12 hours after the service," says Samra. Build-up can also be removed with a clarifying shampoo.

But if you have dry skin or your perm was done with ammonium thioglycolate, it's best to err on the side of caution and wait a full 48 hours before shampooing.

"Washing too soon can cause the perm to come out unevenly or make your curls fall flat," says Samra.

So there you have it! If you're wondering can I wash my hair 36 hours after a perm, the answer is maybe—it all depends on your individual scalp type and how your perm was done.

But in general, it's best to wait at least 24-48 hours before shampooing to ensure that your perm lasts as long as possible.
